Bird Group meeting ~ 13th feb 2012

Many thanks to everyone who came to the Bird Group meeting in Haverfordwest last night. Over 50 people came to listen to Chris Taylor (Skomer Warden) talking about Skomer, Skokholm, the Islands breeding birds migration, current research and the thinking for the future. A particular thanks to Chris for travelling ~ by train ~ from Gloucestershire to come and ‘visit’ us.

Many thanks to the Valero refinery for hosting our annual Pembrokeshire Bird Group Conference at their site in Pembroke. It was again a great day with both entertainment from our Birding World alongside fascinating current research and future projections. Thanks to their generosity all monies from the ticket sales go directly to the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales

The topics covered were ‘the Skokholm rebuild project and update’ (Renate Thome), the ‘Pembrokeshire Bird diary (Lyndon Lomax), ‘an update into bird surveys and more’ (Annie Haycock) The ‘wild wild west’ (USA by Andrew Sinclair). ‘Over wintering Woodcock in Pembrokeshire’ (Paddy Jenks), ‘A trip to Israel (Graham Walker). The Quiz (John Hayes) and the raffle (Nikki Anderson). The conference was closed by Dr M.Havard. Thanks to Haverfordwest artist Sue Wharrad for donating one of her lovely paintings for the raffle - an Osprey

Also thanks from the PBG to all those who helped to run and/or organise the event and to all of you ~ the audience.

Just a couple of pictures above showing but just a few of the work horses and speakers together with Graham Walker (Cambrian Bird Holidays) suggesting yours truly may have a resemblance to ‘Pudsey Bear’

Marine Boat Trips

A series of boat trips are planned for 2011 with CBMWLC and FoCB. Although Dolphin Survey trips they are a great opportunity for all birders to have the chance to go offshore and hopefully find Sea Birds and Pelagic species in their natural environment. Pembrokeshire Bird Group - Conference

Many thanks from the Bird group to everyone for making yesterday’s conference such a success. So many people helped in putting the event together including speakers, volunteers, and, the Wildlife Trust staff. Also of course a thank you to ‘you the audience’ – this years conference was a ‘full house’. We were treated to a variety of presentations from riveting ground breaking science to other aspects of birds and, dare I say it, bird watchers!!.
We would like to say thank you to Chevron for so kindly hosting this year’s conference for us and, to their staff who gave up a Saturday of their time for our enjoyment.

The Pembrokeshire Breeding Birds Atlas is published

After 5 years of fieldwork by some 127 observers, visiting 492 tetrads and collecting some 30,000 records, the Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pembrokeshire 2003-2007 is now a reality. This latest important audit (dare we say health-check) of our breeding birds will be formally launched at this weekends Bird Conference being hosted by Chevron.The book covers more than 100 breeding species, with maps for most showing changes in distribution between the first breeding birds survey (1984-88) and 2003-07. Initially it will be on sale at the conference (price £10-00) and at future Bird Group meetings.
